The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Cotabato Province through the RAPID Growth Project, conducted the validation and monitoring of 11,406 tissue-cultured Cardava banana seedlings distributed to 27 members of the New Caridad United Farmers Association. The intervention forms part of the project’s efforts to support farm expansion and improve the productivity of smallholder banana farmers.

During the activity, 17 farmers were visited and assessed to evaluate the planting status, survival rate, and overall progress of plantation expansion. Field observations showed that most of the distributed seedlings were successfully established, demonstrating the farmers’ commitment to expanding their production areas and enhancing their livelihoods. The assessment also identified factors affecting seedling survival, including pest and disease incidence, environmental stress, and differences in farm management practices. These findings will help guide future technical support interventions to improve crop performance and plantation sustainability.

Beyond monitoring project investments, the activity served as an opportunity for farmers to raise concerns and discuss challenges encountered in managing their banana farms. In response, project personnel, Field Technical Validator Mark Gil Edpalina, provided technical recommendations on pest and disease management, crop maintenance, and good agricultural practices to help farmers improve productivity and maximize the benefits of the intervention.
